About
I'm a historian of modern British political and cultural history, my research concentrating on the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. I started out being interested in the history of British electoral politics, and still do some work in this area (including a just-started project on by-elections with TG Otte of UEA). I've also done work on the 'land question' in modern Britain, the politics of patriotism, and the place of the past in late Victorian and Edwardian culture. My publications included a book entitled "Land and Nation in England: Patriotism, National Identity and the Politics of Land, 1880-1914" (2008), a co-edited collection of essays on the "land question" between 1750 and 1950 (2009), and articles on a range of subjects in various journals. My main large-scale longer-term project involves trying to think about the various meanings English people attached to "natural" landscapes between about the middle of the 18th and about the middle of the 20th centuries.
I'm co-organising a conference on "Borderlands" in the 18th and 19th centuries. We're looking for proposals for papers. See http://www.history.ac.uk/events/conferences/1177 forĀ further details.
