About
I graduated in 1987 from Balliol College, Oxford, with a degree in Classics and Modern Languages (Ancient Greek, Latin, German), and completed my PhD on Goethe in 1991. I've been working in the German Dept at King's since 1993, and since 2002 also as Director of the Comparative Literature Programme.
My research focuses on intersections between European literature and the human sciences (esp. psychology). I'm currently supervising PhDs on 19th-century European fiction and Jung's theory of creativity. In between I'm trying to write a short book on melancholia from antiquity to 1800.
