About

Maris Kask started her MPhil/PhD project in the School of Law in October 2010. Maris graduated with merit from King's College, London, in January 2009 with an LLM in public international law. She also holds an LLB degree with distinction from University Nord in Estonia. Her LLM dissertation ‘Human Rights in Post-Communist Countries: Problems of Integration of Minorities in the Baltic States’ concerned with the minority rights issues in the former Soviet Union countries and examined wider implications and effects of governing a multicultural society.

Maris’s main interests are international human rights, international migration and international humanitarian law. She concurrently works as a researcher at the University of Tartu in Estonia in the Law Department and is a visiting lecturer of international human rights and public international law at University of Tallinn in Estonia. Maris is also involved as a legal advisor and analyst in various research projects that concern with democracy processes in post-communist countries.

Research
Maris’s PhD research is a study of international migration, examining development of international migration law, its impacts on modern societies and interconnection with other salient matters such as recent geo-political and economic changes, human rights law and international peace and security. She intends to focus on voluntary migrants that have relocated for economic or welfare reasons and analyse the current regulation of migration in international law.

Teaching and Employment Interests
Maris is interested in teaching International Human Rights and Humanitarian Law and Public International Law. She is also interested in further researching international migration and human rights in post-communist countries.
