About

Born in 1969, married to Bev with three teenage kids, and a middle aged Labrador.

I describe myself as a ‘reflective practitioner’, involved in both church planting and academic theology, being passionate about the interface between the two.

I was born 31 January 1969 in Luton, and now live in Sutton, Surrey (on the edge of SW London, UK). I received a BA Honours degree in theology at the London School of Theology in 1991, and then qualified as a high school teacher with a PGCE from the University of Greenwich in 1992. I was then an investment broker in City of London for 8 years, whilst also being worship overseer at the Putney Vineyard church, London, UK. I was bi vocational whilst my wife Bev and I planted a church in 1997, that we now pastor full time.

It is an experimental church, exploring how to make disciples in our secular/post-Christian culture of Sutton, SW London, UK. The church has grown to involve over 275 adults and 120 children, many of whom were previously unchurched/pre-christians.

I completed a doctorate (D.Min) in Leadership and Theology in the Emerging Culture with Leonard Sweet at George Fox University, USA in March 2006, graduating summa cum laude and was given the Distinguished Dissertation Award. I am continuing my research with a second doctorate (Ph.D) at Kings College London supervised by Dr Luke Bretheron and Prof Andrew Walker exploring the nature of consumer and secular culture and it’s implications for ecclesiology (how we do church).

For several years I have been networking, resourcing, and coaching pastors and church planters, which has developed into my role as a coordinator for Emergent, looking after communications and international partnerships working with Brian McLaren (author of A New Kind of Christian), and others.

My main focus is developing Deep Church in the UK, which currently has over 1,500 pastors and leaders from a broad range of church streams/denominations, involved in ongoing discussion on it’s email list.

I have organised conferences, and theological symposiums, along with national conferences. I travel nationally and internationally to speak, teach and lecture at conferences, seminaries/universities and churches, on issues of church, culture and theology, drawing on my doctoral studies and practical experience as a church planter and coach.

I am married to Bev, who is on the pastoral staff/team for our church plant. We have 3 children. My personal interests include X-Box, technology in general, Apple Macs, theology, science fiction (literature and TV), music, movies and coffee. For fun I was until recently a Director of Paradigm Capital Management.
